Roger Gastman’s exhaustive historical graffiti documentary “Wall Writers: Graffiti in Its Innocence” is premiering tonight in Detroit at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit. Visit the event page for MOCAD here, or head to their Facebook event to RSVP. Doors open at 7pm and the film starts at 8pm; admission is $5, or free for MOCAD members. The film will be immediately followed by a Q+A with Steve Keso and Mike Hughes, aka SJK 171 and Mike – 171.

“Wall Writers” is the story of the birth of graffiti from 1967 to 1973. Narrated by film director John Waters, the film explores not only early graffiti writing itself, but the writers creating it and the culture that drove them to be recognized by society. Its 350+ page companion book of the same name is available from Gingko Press.
