Ai Yamaguchi

Tokyo-based artist Ai Yamaguchi’s work is truly timeless, drawing on both classical Japanese themes and contemporary styles. Her signature subject, young kimono-clad girls, occupies a fantasy world rooted in the unique history and traditions of Edo Japan’s “floating world”. Ai Yamaguchi’s distinctive style has caught the eye of collectors and curators worldwide resulting in exhibitions throughout the U.S. and Asia. The artist’s first American gallery show, Sukutoko (Roberts & Tilton, Los Angeles, 2003) was an instant sellout and earned her work reviews in Art in America and the cover of Giant Robot Magazine. Designed by renowned Japanese book designer Yoshihisa Shirai, this book will present a comprehensive overview of the artist’s major projects to date, including mural installations, drawings, and Yamaguchi’s hallmark “pillow” paintings on rounded cotton canvases. This distinctively styled publication represents a beautiful collaboration between artist and designer by incorporating typographic storytelling elements into the spreads and includes several gatefold pages that reveal Yamaguchi’s larger format work in all its splendor.
