GINGKO PRESS was established in Hamburg, Germany in 1985 and in Santa Rosa, California in 1991 by Mo Cohen and Julie von der Ropp. The company had been a sales and literary arm of Black Sparrow Press in Europe, but grew quickly into a distribution network for international art publishers. |
The company expanded in 1991 with a new headquarters in the United States with the aid of Black Sparrow’s John Martin. The twin Gingko presses provided distribution services in two continents, and in 1998 began accepting original manuscripts for publication under editorial supervision of David Lopes. |
In 1999 Gingko Press began publishing the iconoclast educator and sociologist, Marshall McLuhan. McLuhan’s writing on culture and literature at Cambridge University sparked discoveries that helped fashion his later dictum "the medium is the message." McLuhan’s writings and speeches foresaw the ascendancy of software over hardware, the rise of pop culture, and that the city’s streets would supersede the museums and galleries as the dominant artistic canvas. |
Today, Gingko Press continues to produce a diverse program of original books and joint publishing ventures with The Estate of Marshall McLuhan. |
We've also begun publishing ventures with Juxtapoz Magazine, Upper Playground, and Kill Your Idols. |
Going forward, Gingko Press has announced a new imprint called Rebel Arts, publishing works of fiction and poetry, and will soon introduce an apparel and paper products line Sidelines / Gingko Press alongside our books. |
In 2005 Gingko Press came full circle, publishing in German translation Black Sparrow’s Screams from the Balcony, The Letters of Charles Bukowski. gingkopress.com/bukowski
