Gingko Press and Upper Playground
Strike Exclusive Publishing Deal

BERKELEY, CA, June 8, 2009

Gingko Press, publishers of popular culture, graphic design, architecture, photography and media titles, announced this week that it has become the exclusive publisher of prominent street wear label Upper Playground’s forthcoming book titles.

Having distributed Upper Playground-published titles for almost five years, Gingko Press will now publish and distribute future titles by progressive artists whose work is featured on Upper Playground apparel and is exhibited at affiliated galleries.

“The synergy between the Upper Playground and Gingko Press missions is totally organic and we look forward to continuing the tradition of putting out great art books drawn from their line of well-known and emerging artists,” said David Lopes, Vice President, Gingko Press.

“Upper Playground is excited about working with Gingko Press, one of the best indie publishers in the world,” said Matt Revelli, founder, Upper Playground.

Both are Bay Area companies, Gingko Press of Berkeley and Upper Playground of San Francisco, and together they plan to release the following titles in September 2009:

Upper Playground: Ten Years of T-Shirt Graphics
Celebrating 10 years of Upper Playground art and design. Follow the progression of Upper Playground from its founding until today. Features over 2000 comprehensive images and work form over 100 artists, including Jeremy Fish, Sam Flores, Anthony Lister, Masa and many more.

There’s Nothing Wrong With You (Hopefully)
Michael Sieben’s take on not sweating the small stuff.  His innocent characters and creatures are unique in that they are both cute and grotesque, their purpose in life to remind us that even though we may have problems we still have reason to smile.

Alianza: The Mac & Retna
A fantastic new title in which MAC & RETNA show off their mural skills. It covers their unique style of combining RETNA’s calligraphic brushwork and MAC’s lifelike reality, and shows how they have developed this style over the past six years. The book also looks at the artists' individual work.

Grotesk: A Decade of Swiss Design Lost in Brooklyn
In Ten Years of Swiss Design Lost in Brooklyn, learn more about Grotesk, a Swiss graphic artist living in Brooklyn. In the last decade he has developed a passion for folk Art, street photography, hand painted signs, vintage sport graphics, old school hip hop and urban anthropology...
